Do watch Revolutionary Road if you want to swim in the unhappiness that is life. Apart from the fact that leonardo dicaprio has to be the most endearing thing when he's crying, you just feel like dumping all your craziness and try being a good woman again, the movie really is about Kate Winslet. Or it's not about both of them at all, it's about the story, and the original book that I hope to catch on to soon.
It is definitely not cinematic brilliance, but I don't see how any young person stuck in the corporate mess cannot sink lower while watching this one. It's got everything we all talk about, Paris is the place to be, we will not be the ones to settle down in urban suburbia, planning for a house and kids, then a bigger house and kids. No we will travel and see the world, kids won't tie us down. Because of course, we tried alternate careers when we were younger, she even tried to be an actress. There were things we did to genuinely feel alive, and laughed at that guy who'll go to work at 8 am every morning and so complains of the noise we can't hear.
We all think endlessly of this dream because we all consider ourselves special. Different. Other than the rest, who will not lose themselves in the larger scheme of the world and keep idealism within touching distance. We had progressive political thought, had an opinion on everything, we will surely do something other than just be.
It's all fine till you have time. Because yes, it's on the cards we are going to break away and do something else. We will 'feel' what we are doing all over again. But it's all a lie, isn't it? Because most of us were born simply to forget that phase at one point. Or to really put it at the back-burner and refer to it in drunken conversations with college friends. Because none of us are fucking special. We all are alike, except with some minor changes, the Constitution drafters were not writing it all for nothing. Most accept it and move on, money is the best balm. But there are some who never stopped dreaming or planning for the big escape, it's so real that they can see it. And they can't make peace with the alternate reality. That's when you lose your mind. And those are ones who are freaky, psychotic, insane. That movie is fucking scary.

i thought it started out slow - that opening fight was slightly cringe-worthy, but i really warmed up to it. michael shannon is the man. and yes, i was all depressed after it ended. hehe.

You know what I totally loved, when she goes like oh I hate you so much that now if you touch me maybe I'll scream. And she does. hehe. I was so happy that people are aware of those kind of weird women. yeah started out so slo0w..even the meeting and everything seemed too acted out.

Now I am tempted to watch it..

But dreaming of doing something in the future surely cant be attributed to drunken conversations in college. There are a few who go ahead and do just what they said. Besides, it would be naive to think that any particular state stays forever, isn't it? We are special. The difference between the achievers and the rest is mind control..

Personally, my sympathies mostly lie with Kate Winslet. Maybe her dying has something to do with it, but she was the wild, artistic, honest and naive one. Di Caprio's character was an average, ordinary man pretending to be something he wasn't. I thought the film was cinematically excellent also. It was quite terrifically shot, the characters were brilliantly acted out and it got its point across pretty well. Anyway, if you think this film was scary in its depiction of a toxic marital relationship, you should watch Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

white: Hm I know a lot of people end up doing exactly what they dreamed of. This is about the other not so ballsy ones who just talk. Sob

Sayak: Oi where art thou. Yeah totally agree with you, kate's character was so fiery, leo was just a regular guy who gets caught up in the working class mess and is quite happy with it, till his wife's personality and non-conformist attitude leaves him helpless. Ya have seen virginia woolf, marital discord in Revolutionary Road was interesting of course, but I was more impressed by the way it expresses the futility of life, and of making plans. Most of them do not work out, good to see at least someone is not candy flossing the real thing

I'm in Kuwait actually. Had gone to Jordan before that. Getting back on the 22nd.

You're right about the making plans bit. Which is why I don't plan anything! Heheheheh! But let's be clear about plans. While there's no doubt that one needs balls of steel to stick to a plan, one must also make plans which are worth sticking to. Stupid, unrealistic plans should be majorly reassessed. My favourite character was the manic depressive mathematician who was Kathy Bates' son, and his words reflected my thoughts exactly. He felt sorry for both of them. He knew that both of them were completely unsuited to each other and that they were living a lie, a fact which ultimately resulted in their disagreement about the Paris plan. Two people need to be on the same page when it comes to making plans which significantly involves both lives. They simply weren't.

You are so right. See no plan will seem unrealistic if it's made with the right people, what could be crazy with on person could be natural with someone else. That's why marriage is terrifying..it's such a gamble and this is what happens when you take a random cafe conversation with a stranger to define your life.

Yeah loved the mathematician too. The discord started when kate felt quite connected to him, and about how he was the only one who understood their need to run away so maybe it's not so bad to be insane, and leo is like hmm. He never wanted to be underground anyway. Loved his last scene when he talks about the kid. Simply brilliant.

And I saw Jordan pictures. It looks amazing! It looks a lot like Oman which I checked out when I went to dubai, the Dead Sea looked good! You know how good that dip is for your skin don't you? ;)

this is one movie in which the mundane scares the shit out of you. i still remember the scene in which she makes him breakfast the morning after their fight.

Heyy...I just wrote something else..check it out when you've the time..
And, I JUST finished watching Revolutionary Road..FFUckin depressing and really, I like watching movies or reading books that I can take something away from. This one had nothing bar outstanding histrionics from LD and KW.
I knew it'd be one of them movies when I saw that one of the Cohen brothers was involved.
But I liked the part where they're arguing abt the abortion and kate Winslet's just completely confused and doubting even whether she loves her children. I thought that was so beautifully shot and brilliantly expressed by KW.
Keep writing..good fun reading..
